Overview
Solar farms and BESS sites are very exposed to lightning. They cover large open areas, run long cables and hold sensitive power electronics. Direct strikes, nearby strikes and surges from grid and comms connections can damage inverters, cause trips and cost you generation. LPINZ designs and supplies lightning protection that suits each site and is cost-justified, based on modern leader-propagation methods.
Direct-strike protection
- Stormaster ESE: covers a large area per terminal. One ESE 60 on an 8 m mast protects about 1 MW of panels.
- Guardian Plus: a corona-minimising tip that captures lightning more reliably than sharp rods.
- HVSC Plus insulated downconductor: lets terminals mount on containers while staying electrically isolated, rated to 500 kV impulse withstand.
Surge protection, earthing & bonding
We specify coordinated SPDs at the combiner boxes, inverter DC and AC sides, BESS PCS, SCADA and auxiliary supplies, and offer smart SPDs with remote condition monitoring. Air-terminal earth grids are integrated with the site earthing network. Earth-enhancing compounds (EEC) are used where soil resistivity is high.
