The Challenge

Large solar developments bring together extensive outdoor electrical infrastructure, including inverter stations and sensitive equipment. The lightning protection solution needed to address:

  • Direct lightning protection for critical infrastructure
  • Protection by isolation for inverter stations
  • A site-specific design in accordance with IEEE Std 998
  • A dedicated, insulated path for lightning current to earth
  • Strike recording to support ongoing inspection and maintenance
  • Coordination of design, equipment supply and final commissioning.

The Solution

LPINZ delivered a coordinated solution combining Leader Inception Theory design, Guardian Plus corona-minimising air terminals, HVSC Plus insulated downconductors and Bluetooth-enabled lightning strike recording.

The approach included:

  • LIT design in accordance with IEEE Std 998
  • Guardian Plus corona-minimising technology
  • Protection by isolation for inverter stations: HVSC Plus (HVSC+) insulated downconductors withstand rating of at least 500 kV
  • Bluetooth-enabled strike recording
  • Full turnkey solution with LP, earthing and commissioning

Why LPINZ
